Recent Natural Disasters in China and Burma

New York, NY - May 13, 2008 - Baruch College extends its heartfelt sympathies to the families of the victims of yesterday's terrible earthquake in China. In particular, we express our concern and support for our students, faculty and staff who hail from western China and who may even now be awaiting news of loved ones. Please know that the resources of our Student Affairs division stand ready to assist any student affected by this tragic disaster, and we encourage you to reach out if you or anyone you know is in need.

The College also wishes to offer condolences to members of our community who lost relatives and friends in the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis. As you no doubt have heard, on May 3, Cyclone Nargis slammed across Burma, also known as Myanmar, causing unimaginable devastation. Reports now suggest that 100,000 people may have been killed and a million more left homeless. Food shortages and the risk of outbreaks of disease make the situation even more dire.

As an international community, Baruch College deeply feels the devastating effects of both natural disasters. Our prayers, best wishes, and deepest sympathies are sent out to all inhabitants of the affected region, and especially to our students whose families and loved ones may be victims of this catastrophe.
