New York, NY – January 23, 2008--It’s tax time again, and more than 450 Baruch College students are ready to prepare taxes, free of charge, for New Yorkers who need assistance with their IRS filings. Now in its 17th year, the Baruch tax program has helped thousands of New Yorkers, many of them elderly or immigrants with limited English language skills.

Working through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA), the students have all been trained and certified by the IRS. Using laptop computers donated by New York accounting firm Anchin Block & Anchin LLP, student volunteers help clients complete the filing process painlessly. This gift was made possible by Anchin tax partner and Baruch alumna Jane Bernardini (BBA '71).

Baruch's VITA program is headquartered in the College’s Newman Library and Technology Building at 151 E. 25th Street, between Lexington and Third Avenues, First Floor lobby, and will be there to provide tax help through the New York State filing deadline of Tuesday, April 15, 2008.

In addition to the Baruch location, students are staffing four other sites--in Chinatown, the Lower East Side and Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, and a new site in Flushing, Queens.

Please check this page for site locations and instructions on what documents to bring with you, or visit the VITA website at http://www.baruch.cuny.edu/vita/ for answers to questions about forms, documents, or filing procedures.

Most of the Baruch volunteers are upper-class accounting students planning future careers as CPAs. Volunteers are qualified to complete federal forms 1040, 1040A and 1040EZ and New York City and State forms IT 150 and IT 201 and accompanying schedules.

The Baruch VITA program is organized under the auspices of the Beta Alpha Psi National Honors Society with support from the Zicklin School of Business, the Starr Career Development Center, the Golden Key International Honor Society, the Stan Ross Department of Accountancy, and UHY Advisors, tax and business consultants.
