New York, NY, Feb. 10 -- Tax time is once again looming on the horizon, and Baruch College students are marshaling to help New York residents with this annual, not-so-pleasant chore. More than 320 Baruch students have been tested and certified by the IRS as tax preparers, ready and able to help you file your federal and New York State tax returns. The service is free and open to the public.

Cathy Huang (’11), this year’s coordinator of the Baruch College Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program notes that 2009 will mark the 18th year that Baruch students, primarily accounting and finance majors, have provided this service. Students will set up their headquarters on the first floor of 151 East 25th Street, site of Baruch’s Information and Technology Building, until Wednesday, April 15.

No appointment is necessary. Tax preparers work on a first-come, first-served basis. All volunteers are qualified to complete federal forms 1040, 1040A and 1040EZ and New York City and State forms IT 150 and IT 201 as well as all accompanying schedules. Reach the VITA Tax Help Line at (646) 312-4600.

Tax preparers are available during the following times:

Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays 10 am to 8 pm
Fridays 12 noon to 7 pm

Please check the VITA website at www.baruch.cuny.edu/vita for answers about documents to bring with you and other pertinent information. The VITA program is made possible with the help of Baruch’s Stan Ross Department of Accountancy, UHY Tax Advisors, and the IRS SPEC (Stakeholder Partnerships, Education and Communication) Office.

ABOUT THE VITA PROGRAM AT Baruch College

For the past eighteen years, the Baruch VITA program has been offering tax preparation help to New Yorkers, primarily low-income and immigrant New Yorkers. Initiated entirely by students, the program has steadily expanded its scope. In 2008, the Baruch VITA team served 5,996 clients (compared with 3000 in 2007) and generated $2,398,469 in refunds.

In addition to its home base at Baruch College, the VITA program has several off-campus sites in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, which the students staff on weekends. Because of Baruch’s remarkable ethnic and linguistic diversity, students are able to provide translation service for Chinese, Russian, Korean and Spanish-speakers at these off-campus locations.
