Baruch Professor Stuart Schulman Receives NSF Grant for Virtual Enterprise Project
NEW YORK, NY – August 31, 2012 – The National Science Foundation has awarded a grant of $898,506 to The Research Foundation of CUNY, Baruch College for support of an entrepreneurship program led by Stuart A. Schulman, Ed.D., professor of entrepreneurship with the Lawrence N. Field Center for Entrepreneurship in Baruch College’s Zicklin School of Business.
In addition to Schulman, the project titled “Student Entrepreneurs: A Reality-Based Video Series following the STEM Virtual Enterprise,” is under the co-direction of Dr. Christoph Winkler, Assistant Professor in Entrepreneurship at Baruch College and Edgar E. Troudt, Instructor of Virtual Enterprise at CUNY Kingsborough Community College.
This project focuses on how faculty members of any STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) discipline have adopted a Virtual Enterprise curriculum. The Virtual Enterprise (VE) is a series of modular activities and events through which students in classrooms of any STEM discipline develop realistic, commercially viable projects.
Schulman and his team will identify four national institutions and examine how they have adopted a Virtual Enterprise curriculum, which was designed by the Institute of Virtual Enterprise, now housed at Baruch. A select group of faculty and students will be videotaped to capture how the curriculum is being applied and how students methodize the curriculum to set up entrepreneurial technology enterprises.
“This project is designed to show STEM professors that they can adopt the best practices for the Virtual Enterprise curriculum,” Schulman says. “Technology is a key component in today’s entrepreneurial landscape. This project will illustrate how professors can maximize their resources in the classroom. We are thrilled to have received this grant to make this project move forward.”
The award grant is effective September 1, 2012 and expires August 31, 2015. During the three-year timeline, video footage will be captured, reviewed and shared with academic and business professionals in the entrepreneurial sector.
