NEW YORK, NY - May 1, 2013 - Baruch College students led the charge at CUNY’s Math Challenge by finishing in the Top 3 spots of the competition. The winners were announced on May 1. The CUNY Math Challenge, sponsored by the Office of Academic Affairs and the CUNY Institute for Software Design and Development (CISDD) and supported by the Office of the Chancellor, is open to CUNY undergraduate students who enjoy solving mathematical challenges.

The competition is made up of four rounds, the first three of which take place online and consist of five mathematical problems each. The competition began February 11 and continued with new online rounds opening every three weeks. Students who participated had until the last day of the three weeks to submit their answers in each online round, and accumulated points along the way. Problems in each round varied on levels of difficulty.

The top performing students after the first three rounds were invited to the final round, an in-person exam that was administered April 28. Approximately 30 qualifying students competed in the final round for up to $15,000 in cash prizes ranging from $500 up to the grand prize of $2,500.

Baruch students Lam Cheuk Hong, a math major, took 1st place and won $2,500; Lee Jerry, a math major, placed 2nd and won $2,000; and Liu Wei, an accounting major, placed 3rd and won $1,500. Baruch student Zheng Xiao, a math major, placed 6th and won a $500 prize.
