Baruch’s School of Public Affairs Scores Second Presidential Management Fellow

New York, NY—May 10—Lori Bianchet (MPA ’07) is not eager to leave her Brooklyn apartment, or New York City —“the non-profit capital of the world”—so soon after graduating from Baruch’s School of Public Affairs this May, but the federal government’s highly selective Presidential Management Fellowship has made her an enticing offer she could not refuse. Bianchet has become the second Baruch student to receive the competitive national fellowship this semester, adding to the lengthy list of Baruch students who have earned national academic acclaim in 2007.

The 30-year-old PMF program places outstanding graduate students with an interest in public service careers in a variety of managerial positions in federal agencies. Fellows pick a primary assignment within one of the participating agencies, but are required to work with several other agencies in different capacities during their two-year tenure. Lori and fellow PMF recipient Heather Reagan (MPA '07) will join colleagues from around the nation to begin the elite two-year training program this summer.

Bianchet will work as a budget analyst on the Budget Formulation Team of the National Parks Service, a relatively smooth transition for her, since she is currently a budget analyst for Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York in Brooklyn.

“Little Flower was founded in 1929 as a summer camp and has evolved into a $50 million agency with programs ranging from foster care and adoption to group homes for developmentally disabled adults and a residential treatment center for children,” said Bianchet. “Having grown up on Long Island, I began working at their Wading River location, but then when I started graduate school at Baruch, I transferred to their Brooklyn office. I am pleased that the three and a half years I have spent at Little Flower will be useful for the PMF experience.”

Bianchet came to the School of Public Affairs two years after earning an undergraduate degree in International Business at James Madison University in Virginia, and says she was drawn to Baruch by its New York City location and reasonable tuition. She also praised the college’s outstanding professors and Career Services Office, which have all taken an interest in the educational and professional development of the students. “I learned about the PMF through (the Career Services Office’s) e-mails, so if it weren't for them I would never have learned of this opportunity.”

Presidential Management Fellows receive classroom training and hands-on experience, a combination that Bianchet finds appealing. Having worked on various domestic and international ‘alternative spring break’ service-learning projects, Bianchet says that the possibility of working with agencies like the Department of State during one of her rotations is just one of the many exciting aspects of her fellowship.

“The more I learn about the PMF program, the more honored I am to have received the fellowship and the more excited I am to begin the next phase of my career.”
