The Steven L. Newman Real Estate Institute Introduces the Advanced Energy Performance Certifcate Program for Property and Asset Managers
NEW YORK, NY-January 12, 2015 - The Steven L. Newman Real Estate Institute in the Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College, is pleased to announce that registration has opened for the new, 15-week Advanced Energy Performance (AEP) Certificate Program developed by the Institute. The AEP program is presented in conjunction with the CIUS Building Performance Lab, with support from the U.S. Department of Energy and NYSERDA, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.
The AEP Certificate Program is designed to meet the continuing education needs of real estate professionals responsible for capital budgeting decisions and best practices in energy asset management. The three-course program, offered entirely online, examines how to increase commercial property energy efficiency, while taking into account social responsibility, for the benefit of owners, operators, managers, tenants and other stakeholders. AEP offers courses that include: “Energy Technologies and Real Estate Strategy;” “Energy Project Finance and Contracts;” and “Energy Change Leadership and Performance Assurance.”
“By examining energy efficiency retrofits as an integral part of real estate strategy and finance, this first-of-its-kind professional program shifts the decision-making paradigm from boiler rooms to boardrooms and outlines how energy performance can move from a practical realm to a profitable one,” said Jack S. Nyman, Executive Director of the Newman Real Estate Institute.
According to reports by the Buildings Technologies Office of the U.S. Department of Energy:
- U.S. buildings account for nearly 40% of the nation’s man-made carbon dioxide emissions
- 18% of the nitrogen oxide emissions
- 55% of the sulfur dioxide emissions
These emissions, primarily from electricity generation, in turn contribute to smog, acid rain, haze, and global climate change. Improving the efficiency of the nation’s buildings can play a significant role in reducing pollution. Building efficiency improvements will also help the nation achieve its goal of reducing energy-related greenhouse gas emissions 17% by 2020.
“We expect that AEP will become a recognized credential in the real estate industry,” said Nyman. “The importance of the AEP Certificate Program to the nation’s commercial real estate industry is underscored by the overwhelming support that the program has received,” said Nyman. “The Newman Institute was the only real estate institute in the country to receive almost half a million dollars from the U.S. Department of Energy for design, development and delivery of content. We also received two separate fundings from NYSERDA: one for program development and marketing and a second that allows substantial tuition subsidies for those who work in New York State and enroll in the AEP Certificate Program. These awards have reaffirmed the importance of the Newman Institute’s work as an industry leader.”
