President Waldron Receives Prestigious
Ellis Island Medal

Baruch College President Kathleen Waldron has been awarded a 2009 Ellis Island Medal of Honor by the National Ethnic Coalition (NECO). The medal celebrates “the richness and pluralism of American life,” pays homage to the immigrant experience, and recognizes outstanding individual achievement. It will be presented to President Waldron on May 9, as part of a festive weekend celebration at Ellis Island.The awards ceremony includes a Gala Dinner that supports NECO’s several partnership organizations, raising money for children in poverty around the world.  

President Waldron joins an outstanding group of prior medalists (, including former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, CUNY Chancellor Matthew Goldstein, author Gay Talese, Daily News publisher Mort Zuckerman and golfing great Arnold Palmer.  President Waldron’s selection honors her commitment to cultural diversity and to the decades-long CUNY tradition of providing educational opportunities to immigrants and the children of immigrants. The medal also recognizes her own immigrant heritage: her maternal grandparents emigrated to the U.S. from Italy at the turn of the last century.
