Baruch College Celebrate Public Relations Pioneer "Edward Bernays and the Century of the Selfie"

NEW YORK, NY-February 19, 2015 - Corporate Communication International (CCI) at Baruch College and The Museum of Public Relations and Library present “Edward Bernays and the Century of the Selfie” featuring Stuart Ewen. This event will be held on March 25 at 6:00 p.m. in the Information & Technology Building at Baruch College. In commemoration of the 20 year anniversary of Edward Bernays’ death, Ewen will discuss media, democracy, and the engineering of public opinion, as viewed by Bernays, and today, in the century of the selfie.

Bernays described the role of public relations counsel as someone who could bring public opinion in line with the interests and goals of leaders in business and government. In today’s social media environment, ordinary people, employing affordable devices connected to the Internet, have become their own publicists, their own media makers, altering the dynamics of American democracy in significant ways, and implicitly challenging many of Bernays’ bedrock assumptions.

Stuart Ewen is a distinguished professor in the Department of Film & Media Studies at Hunter College, and in the Ph.D. programs in History, Sociology and American Studies at the CUNY Graduate Center. He is generally considered one of the originators of the field of Media Studies, and his writings have continued to shape debates in the field. He is the author of a number of influential books, most notably, PR! A Social History of Spin.

This program is free of charge. To register, please visit the CCI Website.
