Baruch College Hosts 49th Commencement at Madison Square Garden Theatre, May 27
NEW YORK, NY- April 30, 2014 –Baruch College, a senior college of the City University of New York (CUNY), will celebrate its Forty-Ninth Commencement Exercises in a double header extravaganza on Tuesday, May 27, with two ceremonies at the Theater at Madison Square Garden. The morning Commencement ceremony will begin at 11:00 a.m. and the afternoon ceremony will begin at 3:30 p.m.
Trevor A. Edwards (’84, MBA ’89), President of Nike Brand at Nike Inc., is the speaker for the morning ceremony and will receive the Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa. Cathy Avgiris (’80), Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Comcast Cable will be the commencement speaker for the afternoon ceremony.

As President of the NIKE Brand, Trevor A. Edwards ('84, MBA '89) is responsible for leading all category and geographic business units, the Jordan Brand and Action Sports, and brand management throughout the world as well as leading NIKE's wholesale, retail and e-commerce operations. Edwards was previously Global Brand & Category Management Executive Vice President, where he was responsible for helping to drive the NIKE Brand growth strategy by leading its category business units globally. He joined the company in 1992 as a Regional Marketing Manager and has held senior marketing positions in the Americas, the Europe/Middle East/Africa region, the U.S. and Global Brand Management. Edwards has led some of the brand’s most significant break-through innovations, including spearheading the creation of Nike+ + and a positioning of NIKE as a leader in connecting with consumers globally.Edwards began his career at The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc., and has also held management positions at Colgate-Palmolive Company. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business and an MBA from Baruch College, City University of New York.
Cathy Avgiris (’80) is Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Comcast Cable. Avgiris is responsible for all functional, programmatic, and financial operations. A 21-year veteran of Comcast, Avgiris most recently served as executive vice president and general manager of communications and data services for Comcast’s Xfinity Internet, Xfinity Voice, and consumer wireless businesses. Under her leadership, Comcast has become the largest Internet service provider and one of the largest phone providers in the U.S. Avgiris was also responsible for launching the Verizon Wireless partnership, managing the operations for the company’s Internet Essentials program— which provides low-cost Internet service to low-income families— and overseeing Comcast’s WiFi initiative. Throughout her tenure with Comcast, Avgiris has also served as senior vice president and general manager of Comcast Digital Voice and as senior vice president of finance for Comcast Cable. Prior to joining Comcast in 1992, Avgiris spent 11 years in finance, serving as chief financial officer of Drexel Industries, Inc., and as an audit manager with Deloitte & Touche. In 2010, Avgiris was awarded one of the cable industry's most prestigious honors, the Vanguard Award for Distinguished Leadership for Cable Operations Management by the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA). She has been recognized as one of CableFAX’s Most Powerful Women in Cable every year since 2006. In 2007, she was recognized as a Wonder Woman by Multichannel News. Avgiris holds a BBA in accounting from Baruch and is a certified public accountant in New York and Pennsylvania.
