Student Teams Prepare Initial Business Ideas for CUNY-IBM Watson Case Competition
Boot Camp, October 24-25

NEW YORK, NY- October 24, 2014 – Student teams from The City University of New York will prepare two-minute business pitch ideas on using IBM Watson cognitive technology during a two-day boot camp, October 24 and 25. Media are invited to view the presentations live at The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, 3 p.m., Saturday, October 25.

Students are challenged with applying IBM Watson technology to improve public services in the government and higher education sectors for New York City. To date, the semester-long CUNY-IBM Watson Case Competition, presented by The CUNY Institute for Virtual Enterprise and The Lawrence N. Field Center for Entrepreneurship at Baruch College, has attracted 254 students from 18 CUNY colleges. Of those, 117 have been invited to participate in the boot camp this weekend, when IBM mentors, faculty advisors and other experts in the field will be on hand to give feedback.Those students will be working through various milestones during the fall 2014 semester, in preparation for being selected for final presentations January 15, 2015, when cash prizes will be awarded to the Top 3 teams.

On Friday, October 24, from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m., 33 teams of 3-4 students will be formed and mentors will be assigned to teams to assist with business ideas. On Saturday, October 25, an overview of the competition will be given by Doris Gonzales, Director of IBM Corporate Citizenship & Corporate Affairs, and by Stan Altman, Professor in the Department of Public Affairs, Baruch College, (10:30 a.m.) as well as a presentation on IBM Watson Cognitive Computing (11 a.m.) Students and mentors will work on ideas (12:00-2:30 p.m.) and teams will make two-minute presentations (3:00 – 4:30 p.m.).
