Bearcats Pounce on
CUNYAC Basketball Tournament
The annual CUNYAC basketball tournament got off to an exciting start during the holiday weekend as the #1-seeded Baruch men beat #8 Medgar Evers (89-86) to advance to the semifinals, while the #1-seeded Baruch women walloped #8 York (69-44). Although played in February, this tournament has all the characteristics of “March madness.”
On Tuesday, Feb. 21, the Baruch men go up against #4 Lehman College. To advance to the finals, they’ll have to contain Lehman’s 6’10” center Sekani Francis, who just edged out Baruch’s own Louis Karis for league MVP honors. If their season record (20-6) is any indication, the Baruch women, who play #5 Lehman on Wednesday, Feb. 22, should have an easier time of it. If the Bearcats make it through, both teams will play in the finals on Friday, the women at 5:30 pm, the men at 7:40 pm.
This year’s tournament is hosted by the College of Staten Island. Not to worry, Baruch is supplying free bus transportation to and from the C.S.I. campus. The Baruch community is invited to head out to that distant isle and cheer on the Bearcats. For bus and other information call 646-312-5048.
Both men and women have had an outstanding year. Players and coaches deserve your support and appreciation.
Tournament semis and finals will be broadcast on live TV on Channel 94 Time Warner Digital Cable, and on live radio at 88.9 FM or online at WSIA.FM
