Baruch Student Wins 2nd Place
in East Coast Entrepreneur Competition
Baruch student Boris Mordkovich was the 2nd place New York State winner in the 2006 East Coast Student Entrepreneur Awards competition, receiving a $500 prize at the awards ceremony at Fairleigh Dickenson University, May 3. Undergraduate-level students in colleges, universities, technical, or career schools who have their own businesses in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, or Delaware were eligible to compete in the competition. First and second place winners were named in each state, and Bertrand Gervais of Binghamton University was named the overall regional winner.
A sophomore who moved to Brooklyn from Lithuania in 1998, Mordkovich was awarded his prize as the director of operations of MordComm Inc., a New York-based Internet marketing firm. The judges considered a variety of factors, including entrepreneurial spirit, obstacles overcome, success of business, concern for quality and customer service, and estimated potential for future success.
Mordkovich began his Internet career in 2000, when he started a Web hosting company and learned search engine marketing. “It’s not often that a person can get involved with something before it becomes big, like Google and Yahoo,” says Mordkovich. “We were involved from the beginning, and it gave us an opportunity to ride on their growth.”
Founded in 2003, MordComm Inc., which Mordkovich runs with his brother Eugene and a staff of eight, is the parent company of what is becoming a mini-empire of Internet marketing enterprises. What one can find under the umbrella of MordComm Inc. includes a print magazine on search engine marketing (the first in the industry), ad tracker and automated bid management software, and free online marketing resources. Boris and Eugene Mordkovich have also co-authored a pay-per-click search engine marketing book.
The competition was administered by FDU’s Rothman Institute of Entrepreneurial Studies. James C. Barrood, Executive Director of the Institute, noted: “It is important for schools to encourage and recognize entrepreneurial students who pursue business ventures because it is these innovative small and growing businesses that are generally responsible for much of the job creation nationwide.”
Mordkovich, who plans on applying to the Zicklin School of Business, already has business savvy to spare. He also sees a bigger picture, of which business is a part: "Whether it's starting your own business or working for somebody else, it's important to never put money as your main goal or aim. Financial rewards will follow if you are good at what you do. And the only way you'll be good at what you do is if you truly enjoy it. I think that's the main secret to being successful and happy."
