Baruch College-Rubin Museum of Art Project Hosts Conference on the Arts and Higher Education

Panelists Include National and International Experts

NEW YORK, NY- April 4, 2014 – Baruch College and The Rubin Museum of Art will host a conference, “The Arts & Higher Education: Building Creative Partnerships and Assessing Program Impacts” from April 10-11. Professionals from the arts, cultural institutions, and higher education will share ideas and develop strategies for engaging students in the arts through innovative programs.

 

Presenters:

David Birdsell, Dean of the School of Public Affairs, will give the opening remarks, followed by Stan Altman, director of the Baruch-Rubin Museum of Art Project and Professor in the School of Public Affairs. Presenters and panelists include: Gina Hernandez Clarke, Director of Arts in Undergraduate Education at Stanford University; David Gruber, Baruch College Associate Professor of Biology and Environmental Science and Research Associate at the American Museum of Natural History; Laura Lannin, Share Academy Academic Coordinator at the University College of London; Michael John Gorman, CEO of Science Gallery International; and Brian Schwartz, Professor of Physics and Co-Director of the New Media Lab at CUNY Graduate Center.

The two-day conference is organized around four themes 1) Increasing Faculty and Student Engagement and Participation 2) Financing and Supporting Collaborative Partnerships 3) Effective Communication Strategies 4) Assessing Impact on Academic Communities and Art Institutions.

The conference is supported through the Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation. In 2010, Baruch College was awarded a five-year grant of $1 million ($200,000 per year) by the Rubin Foundation. Since the partnership was established, the Baruch College-Rubin Museum of Art Project has provided financial support to five CUNY campuses and 34 faculty, who creatively explored ways to incorporate the arts and the museum’s exhibitions and resources throughout their respective courses. This included regular museum visits, hosting art events on campus, and integrating the Rubin Museum’s collection across varied academic disciplines.
