The University of Amsterdam offers summer programs through their UvA Summer School that cover different topics in the humanities, urban studies, political science and social sciences.

Urban Studies: Planning and Living in Cities In this three-week programme students will explore the fundamental issues that are shaping the development and evolution of cities in the 21st century. With a focus on real urban places, the course will examine subjects such as architecture and neighborhood design, housing finance and policy, city planning and sustainability.

The Everyday City and Beyond This three-week interdisciplinary course unravels the practice, theory, policies and politics of ‘placemaking,’ taking Amsterdam as a site for analysis and action. Gain new insights into the fundamental choices and challenges involved in shaping the city. See how policy and design intentions play out in various Amsterdam neighborhoods and communities. And finally, develop a practical skill set by proposing a placemaking strategy for a selected site.

The Urban Food Experience: Exploring Food and the City In order to unravel the complex relationship between food and cities, this three-week course takes an interdisciplinary approach, providing a variety of perspectives that each shed light on a different, but related, element of the urban-food dynamics.

Planning the Cycling City: This graduate level programme unravels urban cycling from a critical and interdisciplinary perspective. For three full weeks, we examine the impacts of history, policy, infrastructure, planning and culture while being immersed into Dutch cycling culture. Participants use their experiences from the city of Amsterdam and their home context to reach a deeper level of awareness and understanding of cycling cities.
