World Views: Images of Sites and Sets
Photographic Images by Nancy Goldring and Abby Robinson
There is a luminous, richly sensual quality to the work of Nancy Goldring and Abby Robinson, currently on exhibition in World Views: Images of Sites and Sets at Baruch College's Mishkin Gallery, October 3-October 23. The pictures in this double exhibition invite the viewer to engage imaginatively with the subject matter and to create a story line around the images. Traditionally, photography captures moments in time. The photographs of Nancy Goldring do much more-they portray layers of time transfigured by light. Goldring presents six series based on sites in Sri Lanka, India and Vietnam. Several explore ancient Buddhist temples, while others examine contemporary landscapes and work sites. Goldring produces her "foto-projections" using a personal technique that combines drawing, projection and photography. The effect is to convey both memory and culture, and a shifting, evanescent reality that is at once subtle and emotionally powerful. Abby Robinson' s photographs are apparently much more direct. They consist primarily of interiors in which everyday objects~hairs, curtains, clothes-become unexpected assertions of color, form and texture. Robinson's images often look diaphanous and cinematic. And even when her "set" is complex, the photographs have a painterly quality. In her own way, she, like Goldring, is an alchemist, altering reality through the use of color and point of view. Both Goldring and Robinson have exhibited their work extensively in galleries both here and abroad. Some 36 pieces are included in the Mishkin Gallery show, which is curated by G. Jesse Sadia. The opening reception is on Tuesday, October 2, 2001, 5-7 pm.
