This exhibition features the prints of seventeen Cuban artists selected by Benigna Chilla, Professor of Visual Arts, Berkshire Community College during a visit to Cuba. The prints represent a wide range of narrative visions, providing comment often disguised in code or metaphor, on political, religious, and social topics. Escape and redemption are recurrent themes in this exhibition, whether they are presented in religious imagery, as in Lázaro Saavedra’s Con la fuerza del ejemplo, a picture of the Madonna and Child on storm-tossed seas, or in the more mundane but affecting vision of Alejandro Ramon Sainz Alfonso who depicts a paper airplane sailing out of a kitchen window.

Bold woodcut prints like Ibrahim Miranda’s El Otro San Cristobal and Ricardo Silveira Miró’s Los Guerreros tell religious and political stories with brash angular and curving lines. In the lithograph entitled La Inmortilidad, José Angel Toirac scrawls the name “Fidel” in a blood-red smear which can be interpreted as evoking a heroic emblem of the Cuban Revolution or even as political blasphemy.

Describing the context of this show, Professor Chilla notes: “This group of artists is diverse in age (ranging from 20 to 60 years old), but shares a commonality in creating a narrative expression of their current life in Cuba. They speak through a poetic, political, humorous or religious visual language, conveying to us their frustrations and trying to break away both physically and viscerally from their everyday life.”
