About Baruch College

An urban, multicultural institution, Baruch College is located at the heart of one of the world's most dynamic financial and cultural centers-the Park Avenue South area of Manhattan on the edge of Silicon Alley. Baruch's mission is to prepare hardworking, motivated students-many the first in their family to attend college-for effective leadership and rewarding careers through business and public affairs programs that are integrated with a broad-based arts and sciences education. By fulfilling its educational goals, Baruch contributes to the economy and culture of New York City, and its selective admission standards create a positive incentive for improving the quality of public education in the City. A senior college of The City University of New York (CUNY)-the largest urban public university in the United States-Baruch offers undergraduate and graduate programs of study through its three renowned schools: the Zicklin School of Business, the Mildred and George Weissman School of Arts and Sciences, and the School of Public Affairs.

Baruch College has a long and distinguished history dating back over 150 years to the founding of the Free Academy, the nation's first institution of free public higher education. (Baruch's landmark building at 23rd Street and Lexington Avenue occupies the site of the Free Academy.) Established in 1919 as City College's School of Business and Civic Administration, the school was renamed in 1953 in honor of Bernard M. Baruch, statesman and financier. In 1968, it became an independent senior college of the City University.

Baruch students come from more than 90 different cultural and ethnic backgrounds, reflecting the diversity of New York City itself, the most demographically complex metropolis in the world. This diversity creates a rich social and academic environment that enhances the educational experience while preparing students for a global marketplace.
