I started as a reporter in '43 and was a copy editor in '44. It was a very happy time for me. However, it was just before we went to war, so it was a strange time, too. And many of our stories were about the war. I was among a group of four Ticker staff people who were also in ROTC and who were tapped to play members of a firing squad in a City Opera production of Tosca. It was a disaster.

My memories are of hunting for petty cash and nonstop hearts games in the Lexicon office. Most of the staff were from Beta Phi Sigma fraternity.
