Raymond J. (’53) and Sandra Gross (’53) Stumberger

It was October 1951, at a Sigma Alpha reception in the ninth-floor lounge at 17 Lex. Sandra was already a member of Sigma Alpha; Ray was being considered for membership. Ray had started uptown, at City College, as an evening student, but had transferred to City downtown (now Baruch) as a sophomore in 1950. Sandra had started at City downtown in 1949. From that meeting in the ninth-floor lounge, the relationship “took off.” Ray was admitted to Sigma Alpha and later followed Sandra as chancellor of that organization.
Sandy and Ray were involved in many other ninth-floor organizations. At graduation, among many other awards, Sandy received a major insignia and Ray a minor insignia.
The draft was in effect and Ray went into the Army in September 1953. We were married on leave in November 1954. Sandy joined Ray at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, SD, in 1955. It was the start of a long life together, traveling to many places in the United States because of Ray’s career with General Electric. Sandy held many different jobs. We moved from place to place: the Bronx; Auburn, NY; Erie, PA; Pittsfield, MA; and Cincinnati, OH. We finally settled in Westport, CT.
Our son Robert was born in 1958, and Douglas in 1962. They both live in Seattle and are associated with Microsoft.
We celebrated 50 years in November 2004 with many of our friends, some of whom were also CCNY marriages. Ninth-floor marriages hold up very well!
