It all started in Consumer Behavior 101 of freshman year. Gary and I met and became friends and study buddies. Throughout our years at Baruch, we worked on projects together, studied over the phone, and once arranged for Jim Bouton, the former Yankees pitcher, to speak at Baruch as part of our public relations class term project. We advised one another about each other’s dates and romantic relationships.
Gary graduated six months before me, and we lost touch for a while. Then one day he called and invited me to a Broadway show. We dated for six months, after which we got engaged and married in 1978.
Not only have we been married for 27 years, we also work together at Book-mart Press. We print and bind hard- and soft-cover books. Gary and his father founded Book-mart Press in 1977, right after Gary’s graduation. The company was growing, and Gary was recruiting me day and night to join him and his dad. I did, and it turned out to be a great move. (Who knew then that over 20 years later we would meet Jim Bouton again through a mutual friend and end up printing and binding his books Ball Four and Foul Ball?)
Gary and I have fond memories of Baruch: meeting all of our friends under the clock, Tony the elevator operator, running from building to building to make class, Tar Beach on 23rd and Lex, taking accounting with Max the Ax, and, of course, the fabulous education we received.
To this day, we always talk about how well our education has served us and how lucky we were to meet at Baruch College.
