Go Back

My husband and I have been married for over 32 years and we had our love connection at Baruch. We were both business students in different departments. My husband graduated in '71 with a degree in finance and I graduated in '73 with a major in education and minor in marketing.

I was president of my class and met a lot of people through the parties I threw in the student lounge. A group of my friends formed The Treat Club. That meant that when we went to lunch at the corner café, someone had to treat the president to lunch. This started as a joke and it worked. I met Burt’s sister, Donna, through a mutual friend I was dining with.

It was winter of '71 and we used to go to Miami Beach for intersession. Burt was shown pictures of our Florida vacation and he wanted to meet me. Donna kept trying to set us up, but I was planning a summer in Europe with other Baruch students, and didn't want to meet someone and delay my trip.

In September, upon my return to Baruch for senior year (again having been voted president), Donna kept trying to get me to meet her brother. But again, we headed to Florida for intersession and Donna took more pictures to show her brother. This time she made sure that Burt and I went on a date.

So Burt called me and we made plans; conveniently we both lived in Queens. As Saturday approached I got sick and couldn't get in touch with him, not knowing his last name or his phone number. He showed up and I was sick in bed. He came into my room, chaperoned by my mother and as soon as I saw him, I knew I was going to marry him. Knowing that he wore a suit to work helped, since the men I hung around with at that time all drove cabs to pay college tuition and housing.

Those were the days of Richie Havens forgetting to show up for Convocation; and Earth, Wind and Fire jamming the auditorium; Randy Newman playing the piano with two floating swimming pools on 23rd Street, and Tony manning the elevators (Remember when we wore “Up With Tony” buttons?!) and Ron Bruce was the student lounge coordinator, and I continued to get free lunch.

We have lived in Orange County, New York, for the last 30 years. Burt is an EVP for GMC and I have been teaching high school business. We have two married daughters, a son in college, and a beautiful grandson, and it all started at Baruch!!!!
