Alumnus Remembers

Thank you for the manner in which you handled my letter and song in the last issue (BCAM Winter/Spring 2006, pages 3 and 37). I came away feeling I had made a meaningful contribution to the alumni cultural scene.

In appreciation, I would like to reveal for the first time the story behind my successful Student Council presidential campaign:

At the time of the election, I was working in the Evening Session Office and so was at the College on the eve of election. That night I went to every classroom in the building and wrote on the blackboard, “Don’t write’er. Don’t telegraph’er. Foner for president of the Student Council.” The result: The first thing that students saw when they came in that morning was my election slogan. Dirty pool? Maybe, but the statute of limitations has probably expired. Anyway, it’s too late for my opponent to ask for a return.

Henry Foner (’39)
Former President, Fur, Leather & Machine
Workers’ Union (1961–88)

Thumbs Up

I just read the food feature in the Winter/ Spring 2006 alumni magazine, and I wanted to thank you for it. It looks great (and reads great)!

We just took over another restaurant (a much larger one) on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. It’s called Zeytin (which means “olive” in Turkish) and is located on the corner of 85th Street and Columbus Avenue.

Thank you again and regards,

Ozgur Isitan Gun (MBA ’00)

Congratulations on your last issue of the magazine. Seldom do I see such a well-balanced piece featuring two of my favorite interests—food and animals. Management Professor Bob Laud truly amazed us with the “dog sledding” and environmental skills we didn’t know he had. These come as a fascinating addition to his admirable professional skills. I hope you uncover more such interesting stories about our diverse faculty and the exciting things they do that make them “real people” as well as professors. Excellent.

I really enjoyed your latest issue with its focus on Baruch alumni in one particular industry (in this case, food). The whole magazine looked like a livelier and more inviting redesign, or did I simply not notice this new look in previous issues?

Congratulations to the whole staff—

Stephanie Schus (MBA ’73)

Editor’s note: Baruch College Alumni Magazine was redesigned in Fall 2005 by Tom Dolle Design.

The timing of the last alumni magazine issue was perfect. Recently a group of Baruch undergraduates and I were planning on launching a food club. This issue served as an inspiration to involve not only faculty (Professor Barbara Katz Rothman, for example, who authored the essay “What’s Cooking? A Taste of Food Studies,” page 36) but also alumni, especially those passionate Baruchians in NYC’s exciting food business.

Congratulations on a great issue! The Winter/Spring 2006 special food issue “A Taste for Success” was fun and informative, with its profiles of Baruch alumni in the food industry. Good to know about the neighborhood restaurant 101, a Turkish eatery, launched by Baruch alumnus Isitan Gun (MBA ’00) (see BCAM Winter/Spring 2006, page 19). We’ll plan a meeting of the International Business Alumni (IBA) Association at this restaurant this spring. Without the Baruch College Alumni Magazine, we wouldn’t have made the connection.
