SHARLENE SYLVIA, 26

When Sharlene Sylvia moved to the Washington, D.C., area in June 2004, she didn’t know a soul there. A lifelong New Yorker, she’d been selected for the Management Development Program at Deloitte & Touche, her employer of six years. The two-year program, which places high-performing managers in national offices, provides a “fast track” within the company. As it turned out, Sylvia loves living and working in D.C. and has made many friends in the past year. “It’s a very friendly town, a young town,” she says. “I hope to be able to stay here permanently.”

There’s a good chance of that: Sylvia has been an exemplary employee at Deloitte since her internship with the company in 1998. She was also a motivated student at Baruch, according to Career Development Center Director Patricia Imbimbo, who recalls, “Sharlene was very generous about helping other Baruch students prepare for their job search.” According to Sylvia, helping others with their résumés and interview preparation also “helped bunches with my own career search.” It was through the CDC that she found her internship.

In Deloitte’s D.C. office, Sylvia works in the tax controversy group, helping resolve issues that clients have with the IRS. She finds it very rewarding, and, needless to say, clients are often very grateful. A licensed CPA since August 2004, Sylvia is currently studying for a Master of Science in taxation at American University, and Deloitte is sponsoring her studies. Her ultimate goal within the company is to become director or partner.
