In the wake of the Sept. 11 tragedy, federal and New York State officials sought the help of Baruch's Field Center for Entrepreneurship and Small Business. Their request: to assist Manhattan-based and other New York City businesses affected by the attack.
The Field Center mobilized its resources. It helped businesses obtain emergency relief through both Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Small Business Administration (SBA) programs. Three Field Center counselors assisted at the FEMA offices at Third Avenue and 40th Street. Within 48 hours, the center helped its clients receive SBA emergency loan approvals. (Among those assisted were a wholesale seafood company, a car service, a sign painting business, a tour operator, a flower shop, and a financial trading company.) The center also helped clients identify and receive aid through additional relief programs.
Right now, the Field Center is developing a training and counseling program to help affected businesses rebuild. This program hopes to focus on financial and marketing issues.
