Newman Library Building

The Information and Technology building, located at 151 East 25th Street began as a power station for the Lexington Avenue system of the Metropolitan Street Railway Company. The machinery needed to run the railway from 23rd Street to 105th street along Lexington Avenue was housed in the basement while the upper floors were leased for offices.

The cable car became obsolete in less than two decades after the construction of the Metropolitan Street Railway Company building but its upper floors were utilized by other companies. Before its acquisition by Baruch in the 1980's, it housed printers, garment factories, a carpentry school, and a garage on the first floor.
