Abstract: This collection contains materials about Hartwig Baruch, elder brother of Bernard Baruch, and his family.

Biographical History

Hartwig Nathaniel Baruch, the elder brother of Bernard Baruch, was born in 1868. He began his career as a successful stage actor under the name Nathaniel Hartwig, eventually following his younger brother to Wall Street when offered a seat on the New York Stock Exchange. Hartwig married Arline Lennox in 1917 and had a son a year later. He died in 1953.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The collection consists of items which used to belong to the families of Hartwig Baruch and his wife, Arline Lennox. Among these items are a small number oil paintings of Hartwig Baruch, newspaper clippings on his family and on his famous brother Bernard, a small amount of correspondence, including signed letters from the Guggenheims, documents such as a certificate of naturalization, large number of photographs, including tintypes and daguerreotypes, autographs on Nathaniel's and Arline's photos, a small amount of printed materials, mostly related to Simon Baruch, father of Bernard and Hartwig, and a small amount of ephemera arranged in the subject files.
