Baruch Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) Office (formerly IRB)

Announcements

  • Beginning September 1, 2011, Hannah Rothstein will be resuming her role as IRB Chair. All application revisions and questions should continue to be sent to the chair’s email address: irb.chair@baruch.cuny.edu.

We would like to thank Lauren Block for her great work as Acting IRB Chair for the 2010-2011 academic year.

In the upcoming weeks, you will begin to receive notices regarding the reorganization plan for CUNY IRB’s. Please read these letters and follow the directions included in these notices so that you will be prepared when the reorganization occurs.

  • Our annual report of applications received is now available. Click here to view.
  • There is now help available for students submitting applications to the IRB. Ozge Aybat is the new Student Liaison to the IRB. Please click here for details.
  • Continuing Review Forms will not be accepted more than a month in advance of the protocol expiration date. Please note that you will receive three renewal reminders by email. Please submit your continuing review form after you receive the third notice.
  • All Exempt Applications will be given a three-year termination date. Exempt applications will no longer receive open ended approvals. PI's will be required to submit new applications on or before the termination date to continue exempt research. This requirement became effective December 1, 2009. All Exempt applications approved before this date are subject to the previous open ended approval rule.

7.3.2.3        Nonrenewable.  Approval of exempt research is   nonrenewable.  The duration of study for exempt research is limited to that specified on the approved application, not to exceed three years.  Investigators wishing to continue exempt research beyond the period specified on the approved application must submit a new application to the IRB for approval at the conclusion of the original period.

  • All persons submitting Multi-Campus protocols will be required to submit their protocols to the CUNY-Wide IRB. Please contact Arita Winter, the CUNY Wide IRB Administrator, if you have any questions regarding CUNY-Wide IRB application submission procedures. This does not apply to PI's conducting research in Non-CUNY universities. Please note that PI's who are amending their applications to include multi-campus research (i.e the addition of a PI from another CUNY Institution, etc.) should submit amendments/continuing reviews to their local IRBs who will then forward the application along with the IRB file to the CUNY Wide IRB who will review the protocol. Once approved as a multi-campus protocol, all reviews (amendments, continuing reviews, etc.) will be conducted by the CUNY-Wide IRB.

7.6.8      CUNY Multi-Campus Review.  A multi-campus protocol is defined as a protocol that involves the conduct of human subjects research at more than one CUNY campus.  Since CUNY has one FWA, it is only necessary for one IRB within the CUNY system to review and approve a multi-campus protocol.  In order to avoid unnecessary duplication of the review process and unnecessary delays for the investigators, only the CUNY-Wide IRB will review multi-campus protocols.  The processes for submitting and reviewing multi-campus protocols are described below.  Each local IRB Chair will have the opportunity to participate in the review of all research proposed on his or her campus.  All local IRBs shall accept the decision of the CUNY-Wide IRB without further review.

It is incumbent upon the PI to indicate on the IRB application that it is a multi-campus project, and indicate which CUNY campuses will be involved.

  • PI's will be required to submit IRB Applications via IRB Manager. Continuing Review and Amendment forms will still be using the current forms. This will not become effective until February 1, 2010.

If you've submitted applications between 2006-present, please click here for IRB Manager directions.

If you are a new PI or haven't submitted a application since 2006, please click here for IRB Manager directions.

  • Our IRB numbering system will become standardized beginning January 4, 2010. The new numbering system will be as follows:

two digit year - two digit month - yearly application tally- registration #

For example, the first application received in 2010 will have the following number:

             10 - 01- 001 - 0131
