Remarkable Scholars [Volume II]: 2005-2006 Academic Year

The following list of Scholar awards, accomplishments, and activities reflects the mission of the Honors Program and the stature of the remarkable students who participate in it.  It is a partial list, with apologies to those Scholars who whose names and merits have been overlooked.  This list is an affirmation of Scholars’ abilities, their motivation, their commitment to serving the college and outside community, and the diversity of their interests.

 

Zoie Blackwood is participating in the Summer Civil Rights and Social Justice Institute, hosted by the National Equity Center.  This selective program is for students who are interested in becoming community change agents and/or interested in the intersection of policy, government, and civil rights.

 

Rachel Klapper organized an event for Holocaust Remembrance Day, which over 500 people attended.

 

Yan Kuznetsov was the recipient of a Colin Powell Fellowship for an eight-week summer internship at either the State Department or the US Mission to the United Nations.  This highly selective fellowship is for students who are interested in pursuing careers in international relations.  Yan previously worked at the office of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.  He was also given a Weissman School Service Award at a ceremony on May 11th

 

Sarah Li, a Biology major, has been selected as a CUNY Jonas E. Salk Scholar.  This award includes $6000 in scholarship money to support graduate study in medicine.

A Salk Scholarship is one of the most prestigious awards bestowed upon a CUNY graduate.

 

Jeffrey Lowenhaupt was one of this years winners of this year’s Ethics Bowl Debates.

 

Katherine Maher named CUNYAC 2005-2006 Scholar-Athlete of the Year.  Katherine has been one of the top pitchers in the CUNY Athletic Conference for the past four seasons.  In 2004, she was named the Bearcats Most Valuable Player

 

Sofiya Masterovaya was the recipient of a $5000 College Now scholarship for Continued Excellence in Civic Responsibility.  She will be attending Hunter School of Social Work this fall.

 

Mary O’Regan was awarded a $2000 BP Community Scholarship award for the third straight year. 

 

Hamid Rashidzada, a junior Finance major, won the undergraduate Abraham Briloff Prize in Ethics for his essay “Sharing Consumer Information: US Banking Deregulation and its Impact on Consumers.

 

The Summer 2006 Baruch Alumni Magazine’s cover article is entitled “A Fine Romance: Couples who found Love at Baruch, features Scholar alumni Nimisha Dave Baball and her husband Kevin, as well as Keith Harden and his fiancée  Diana Lazarte.  Not featured in that article were Matt Benecke and Heather McLaughlin, who were recently engaged.

 

A number of Scholars have served on the staff of this year’s Encounters Magazine, the English Department-sponsored literary journal. They include Dov Gibor, Editor-in-Chief, Julie Solovyeva, Managing Editor, Maria Dorfman, Business Manager, and Jennifer Blecher, Copy Editor.  The Spring 2006 publication included submissions by Andrew Lawler, Irina Golub, Dalton Randall, Boris Berdichevskiy, Jana Kasperkevic, and Laura Vardanian.

 

Another Baruch publication, Dollars and Sense, was edited by Liman Cheng.  Prijo Thomas contributed an article entitled “Steroids Strike Out: Baseball Finally Takes a Tougher Stand on Substance Abuse” to the May 2006 issue.

 

Scholars are serving on the editorial staff of The Ticker.  They include Jana Kasperkevic. Features Editor, Jacqueline Chancer, Arts Editor, and Dov Gibor, Copy Editor.

 

For the fourth consecutive year, the Baruch Chapter of Model UN participated in a simulated United Nations Conference.  This year’s team, “representing” the Kingdom of Jordan, included Nino Makharadze, Danika Chen, Tamara Fazylova, Yelena Kalontarov, June Khin, Carolyn Kingston, Chong Li, Evandro Migoti, Vadim Partin, and Laura Vardanian,

 

A number of scholars have assumed positions of leadership on campus. Stephanie Lew served as President of Golden Key International Honor Society in the fall 2005 semester, with Natamil Abreu assuming this position in spring 2006.  Ryan Meltzer was just elected to the position of President and Nicole Lee the position of Vice President of Golden Key International Honor Society for the 2006-2007 academic year. Ryan is also serving as President of the Archery Club. Crisann Shair will serve as President and Sonal Mehta as Executive Vice President of of Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society This past year, Josif Kharazishvili was President of the Baruch chapter of AISEC, the largest international student organization.  Yan Kuznetsov was President of the Finance and Economics Society.  Nino Makharadze was elected to serve as President of Baruch’s chapter of Model UN. Vadim Partin, Laura Vardanian, and Sneha Vazirani have also served as officers of MUN.    Dov Gold-Medina was the Editor-in-Chief of Encounters Magazine.  Liman Cheng was Editor-in-Chief of Dollars and Sense this past year.  Danielle Lemberg was President of the college’s new Debate Team.  Nicole Lee was the co-founder and coordinator of the Baruch chapter of Project Sunshine, a not-for-profit organization that provides services to children with AIDS, cancer, and other life-threatening illnesses.  Aiola Tufa was President of the Albanian Student Council.  Boris Genchev was President of the Chabad Club.  Andrey Teverovskiy,Vitaly Popov,  and Henri Myftiu were all officers of The Chess Club.  Sophia Leung was an officer of Chinese Christian Fellowship.  Julie Solovyeva was founder and President of the Cinema Society.  Uri Dallal was an officer in College Republicans.  Ekaterina Ogorodnik was President of Epsilon Phi Omega.  Marina Goldenberg, Alona Vorobyov, and Dorin Rosenshine were all officers of the Hebrew Culture Club;   Arvind Jagarnath served as President of the Investment Banking Club.  Solomon Choicha was an officer for the Jewish Business Leaders and the Philanthropy/Community Service Chair for Alpha Epsilon Pi.  Through the latter position, he led a successful canned food drive for City Harvest and a bone  marrow registry drive.  Dahlia Masri was President of the Jewish Women’s Group, while Rachel Klapper and Adam Krantz were officers in KOACH, a Jewish cultural organization.  Stacy [Xi] Chen was President of the National Asian American Society of Accountants.  Andrew Joe and Franklin Cho were officers of the Political Discussion Group.  Raqshinda Khan served as President and Dalton Randall and Diana Govshiyevich as officers of the Pre-Law Society.  Noguese Aigbogun was Vice President of the United International Student Body.  Sana Tariq was President of Women in Islam.

 

The Baruch Debate team was formed approximately one year ago.  Its participants include Danielle Lemberg, Nicole Lee, Dimitry Povazhuk and Vadim YerokhinThis year the team succeeded to the Octafinal Round of the Novice and Junior Varsity National Tournament, held at West Virginia UniversityVadim and Dimitry took 5th place in the Novice Division.

 

Several scholars were honored at the Baruch College Awards Ceremony, held on May 25th.

  • Tatyana Bezpalko: Herman and Pauline Abrams Award for academic excellence and achievement
  • Jennifer Blecher: Edward Rothman Award for excellence and scholastic achievement in the study of law; Award for Excellence in Investigative Economic Journalism; Institutional Investor Award in Journalism; Student Media Services Award.
  • Ann Chow: David and Lillian Swerdlow Award for exceptional promise in the theatrical arts
  • Dennis Feihel: Morton Wollman Medal for outstanding achievement in Economics.
  • Yunna Gleyzer was selected to participated in the NY Society of Security Analysts 2006 SEMI Program
  • Maritza Hernandez is a research assistant for the NY Immigrant Organizations Project, which is funded by the Rockefeller Foundation.
  • Dov Gold-Medina: Excellence Award in Political Science
  • Maria Ingravallo: Arnold Picker Award for Excellence in Political Science; Morton Wollman Award for outstanding achievement in Political Science
  • Henry Jun: Morton Wollman Award for outstanding achievement in Industrial Psychology
  • Bella Kizhnerman: Henry Wollman Prize for outstanding contributions to student life and the ideals of service
  • Richard Leung: Excellence Award in English
  • Stephanie Lew: Barry Epstein Memorial Award to the student who demonstrates significant involvement in student activities
  • Sarah Li: Arnold Picker Award for Excellence in Natural Sciences
  • Jeffrey Lowenhaupt: Excellence Award in Philosophy; Arnold Picker Award for Excellence in Philosophy
  • Katherine Maher: Baruch College Alumni Association Athlete-of-the-Year Award; Baruch College Women’s Softball MVP
  • Zahira Medina: Eisner and Lubin Scholarship Award for Graduate Studies in Accountancy and Taxation; Nathaniel Greenberg Memorial Award of Brout and Co. to a student majoring in accountancy with the best scholastic average in accountancy subjects
  • Olga Pester: Excellence Award in Journalism
  • Dalton Randall: Coppola/Greenberg Law Prize for a student who has been accepted to Law School.  Baruch College Alumni Association Award in Arts and Sciences; Excellence Award in History; Arnold Picker Excellence Award in History
  • Irina Ratner: Aaron Strauss Memorial Award to an outstanding undergraduate marketing major; Morton Wollman Medal for outstanding achievement in Marketing
  • Maria Scognamiglio served as Logistics Chair for the highly successful second annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life held at Baruch this spring.  This year’s event raised over $77,000.
  • Daniel Silva: Excellence Award in Art

 

Each year, the Chancellor’s Awards are giving to CUNY Honors College juniors in recognition of academic excellence, student leadership, and community service.  This years awardees included Bushra Ahmad, Yelizaveta Dukorskaya, Matthew Furleiter, Ravi Gilll, Yunna Gleyzer, Maritza Hernandez, Olga Kerzhner, Carolyn Kingston, Edmond Kiregian, Anna Koltonyuk, Polina Kusheleva, Yan Kuznetsov, Ryan Meltzer, Vadim Partin, Harbani Raza, Rabail Razi, Darwin Recentes, Tina Shah,  and Ruthie Wagh [Chancellor’s Award for Academic Excellence – GPA of 3.9 or higher].  Recipients of the Chancellor’s Award for Student Leadership and Community Service included Ryan Meltzer, Eduard Mikinberg, and Julie Solovyeva.

 

Too many of you to mention individually were elected to campus chapters of Golden Key International Honor Society, Phi Eta Sigma, and Beta Gamma Sigma honor societies.
