Journalism Workshop

The Summer Journalism Workshop is an exciting opportunity for talented high school students who are interested in the news media to get a rich and realistic overview of journalism in the New York area.   The four-week program introduces students to the world of journalism through lectures, meetings with working journalists, and tours of some of the world's leading media outlets.  The program culminates in the publication of a 16-page newspaper that has a minimum of five stories contributed by each student. Students learn about news reporting, writing and interviewing and will produce a newspaper under the direction of a journalism instructor.

Students begin the workshop by identifying stories, and finding and interviewing sources.  After writing, editing, and rewriting, students produce Here and Now, the newspaper of the Summer Journalism Workshop.  Guest lecturers from numerous media venues, including the New York Times, the Associated Press, and Newsday provide students with the opportunity to meet professionals in the field.  Additionally, students expanded their learning outside the classroom during field trips to WABC-7, WCBS Newsradio 88, NY1News, MTV, and Bloomberg.

The College Now Summer Journalism Workshop is open to New York City High School students who will be entering the 10th, 11th, or 12th. Students are selected on the basis of their interest in journalism, academic achievement, and writing ability.  The 2008 workshop will meet July 14 - August 7, Monday - Thursday, 10:00 - 4:00.
