Campus Operations

Operations

Basic services that are directly related to routine operations, maintenance and repair of the college's approximately 1.5 million square feet of facilities are provided automatically without charge to the college community. These services include the following:

  • General maintenance and repair to provide safe, functional and clean facilities.
  • Maintenance of sidewalks and plantings.
  • Operation, maintenance and preventive maintenance of central and building utilities systems and related systems.
  • Routine custodial services, including recycling.
  • Elevator maintenance.
  • Energy conservation.
  • Minor construction.

Non-routine services, e.g., minor renovations and moves, are not automatically funded and must receive special approval by the administration before they are accomplished.

The operations'  section is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of the college's facilities, including its heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment and for minor construction projects.   The section has  carpenters, electricians, plumbers, steamfitters, painters, stationary engineers, high pressure plant tenders and maintenance mechanics on its staff.

Operations receives all requests for service at its Operations Desk. The Operations Desk functions as the communications center and clearing house for all requests for repairs and alterations and emergencies related to the physical plant. (Complaints should be directed to the Buildings and Grounds Office at 646-660-6630). Normal business hours for the service center, are 8:30 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday through Friday. At all other times you will be directed to call Security at 646-660-6000 for physical plant related emergencies. Basic operational and maintenance services may be requested by calling extension 6630 during duty hours or submitting a Request for Services which can be found on the college's web site. Emergency calls for assistance during off-duty hours should be made to Security. If the request requires immediate attention, the Operations Desk will radio dispatch a mechanic to the problem.

The Operations Desk will accept requests for minor repairs, e.g., correct a flickering light, and emergency calls in any form convenient to you. Calls for minor construction and for moves must be in writing. Such requests must be approved by a dean or administrative section head. All requests for services are given a work-request number for follow-up.

Operations also provides project management services when construction projects and maintenance that are the responsibility of the college (as opposed to projects for which CUNY or DASNY are responsible) are accomplished by contractors.
