Getting help with your Career Exploration & Planning: Career Counseling and Vocational Testing
Career counseling provides students with assistance as they go through the process of exploring, choosing, and selecting a satisfying major and career. Students may make an appointment to meet with a trained counselor for 30 - 60 minutes to discuss relevant topics, to take vocational tests, or to learn the results of testing. They can meet for one or several sessions depending on their individual needs.
Finding a good fit with a major and career is a two-part process:
1. Conducting an in-depth self-assessment
2. Gathering information about the world of work.
|
During this process, students have an opportunity to discuss their hopes and fears about any part of the major/career selection and job search process.
Vocational testing can be a part of the career counseling process if the student and the counselor decide that it will be helpful. Students may take a vocational assessment instrument, such as the Strong Interest Inventory or Myers Briggs Type Indicator to help with the self-assessment process. Other assessment tools are available as needed.
To make an appointment for career counseling, a resume review, or a mock employment interview, come to the CDC (VC 2-150) or call (646) 312- 4674. Students are asked to arrive 5 to 10 minutes before their first appointment to complete a brief data sheet. To cancel or reschedule an appointment, please notify the CDC by leaving a message at the above number at least 24 hours in advance.
