Tips for career success
  • Exhibit a Can-Do Attitude. Take on any task assigned - no matter how small - with enthusiasm. Take the initiative to acquire new skills. Accept criticism graciously and don't take it personally.

  • Learn the Unwritten Rules. Get to know your co-workers early in your internship or job. Ask questions and pay attention to how people interact with each other.

  • Take Your Assignments Seriously. Build a reputation for being dependable. Be diligent and accurate in your work. Prove yourself.

  • Meet Deadlines. Always assume responsibility by asking when an assignment is due. If you believe you won't meet your deadline, do not wait for the last minute to inform your supervisor of this. Be prepared to explain why you could not meet the deadline, and outline the steps you will take to complete the assignment and when you expect it to be done.

  • Set Realistic Goals and Expectations. Seek regular reviews from your supervisor to assess your performance, so you can improve.

  • Communicate Respectfully. When you are new on the job, assume that everyone else knows more than you do. However, do not be afraid to respectfully present useful ideas that may save time or money or solve problems. Find out the proper way to address individuals, including customers.

  • Be Flexible. Accept a wide variety of tasks, even those that may not relate directly to your assignments. Showing your willingness to go the extra mile, especially during busy periods, will help you build your reputation as a "team player."

  • Be a Team Player. In today's work environment, success is often defined along the lines of your ability to get along with and interact with others. Be willing to share with others and consider the effects of your actions on the entire group.

  • Get a Mentor. Identify at least one individual who is willing to take an interest in your career development and success.

  • Network Get to know the people you work with.

  • Be friendly. Participate in work-related social functions and become an active member in your work community. Try to accept invitations to have lunch with co-workers.
