Making the Most of Your internship

What is an internship?

An internship is a short-term employment opportunity that allows you expand your academic learning by obtaining hands-on work experience prior to graduation. Internships can take place during the fall, spring or summer; can be paid or unpaid; and can be full-time or part-time.

Why do an internship?
    Internships can enable you to:
  • Gain experience and skills
  • Build a competitive resume
  • Explore career interests
  • Develop a sense of professionalism
  • Create a network of professional contacts
  • Establish references
  • Potentially earn income to help defray college costs
  • Get a first-hand look at potential employers
  • Increase opportunities for employment after graduation (interns often receive full-time job offers from employers)
How To Obtain an Internship
  1. First, think about your career goals and assess your interests if necessary
  2. Write a resume and cover letter. Have them reviewed at the CDC.
  3. Find internship opportunities.
  4. Send your resume (and cover letter) to the companies of interest to you. The job description will specify how to send your resume. The more internships you apply for, the better chance you have of being selected for interviews.
  5. If you are selected for an interview, make sure you prepare ahead of time. Come to the CDC and sign up for a videotaped mock interview. After your interview, send a thank-you note to the employer.
  6. If you receive an offer, notify the Career Development Center by filling out an Internship Placement Form immediately.
Where to Find Internships

  • Look through the Orange Internship Binders that are located in the Career Development Center's library at 2-150 VC.

  • Search the Internet for internship websites, internship programs described on company websites, and professional associations listing internship opportunities.
  • Network! Discuss your interests with professors, peers, family members, and industry professionals.
  • Attend Internship Fairs, Career Days, and company information sessions. The Baruch College Internship Fair is an annual event that takes place during the Spring (usually in February). Career Days occur in the Fall and the Spring. On the day of the event employers set up information tables, collect resumes, and meet informally with Baruch students. Approximately 50 employers and 800 students are in attendance.
  • Attend an Internship Seminar to find out more about landing an internship opportunity and jump-starting your career.
  • Contact the Weissman Center for International Business, which arranges internships for Baruch juniors, seniors and MBA students with firms doing international business in the New York metropolitan area. Although the primary focus is on local internships, some take place abroad. Contact the Weissman Center by phone at (646) 312-2070 or by e-mail at: weissman_center@baruch.cuny.edu or visiting them at 137 E. 25th St., 8th Floor.

International Students and Internships

F-1 international students are permitted to apply for a paid internship through a program called Curricular Practical Training (CPT). For CPT, you MUST register for an internship course at Baruch (contact the academic department chairperson to inquire about eligibility and registration for internship courses). You will receive college credit(s) for the internship course and can be paid by the company. Please note that you must be in F-1 status for specified minimum length of time to be eligible for CPT. Be sure to visit the International Student Service Center IN ADVANCE to find out the steps you MUST follow to qualify for CPT! Be aware that there are deadline dates for each semester to apply for CPT. For more information, visit http://www.baruch.cuny.edu/issc/index.html

Internships for College Credit
