THE ALEXANDER STRING QUARTET
featuring Zakarias Grafilo, Frederick Lifsitz, Paul Yarbrough,
and Sandy Wilson
- Boston Globe
“An unusually fine group – musically, technically, in
just about anyway one wants to view it”
- The New York
Now in its 30th year, the world renowned Alexander String Quartet returns to BPAC to give two New York premieres exploring remote landscapes in a journey from Vienna to Patagonia and back, featuring Cindy Cox's Patagón and Tarik O'Regan's Gradual. These dynamic premieres are presented alongside classic works by Haydn and Schubert.
November 16, 7:30 pm
The program for November 16th features the New York premiere of Cindy Cox’s Patagón. Patagón is a musical portrait of the southern Argentinian landscape inspired by a trip to the Valdes peninsula nature preserve in which Cox evokes aspects of sky, earth, and animal life “a stunning demonstration of how expert scoring married to a wide-ranging imagination can bear infinitely satisfying fruit,” (Fanfare). Patagón is presented with Haydn’s String Quartet in C major, Op. 76, No. 3, and Schubert’s String Quartet No. 15 in G major, D. 887.
November 18, 7:30 pm
The program for November 18th features Tarik O'Regan's Gradual (2016), commissioned by The Boise Chamber Music Society. Gradual is a reflection of the “perpetually shifting and evolving landscape... the unique geographical phenomena of Idaho.” O’Regan’s work, described as “beautifully-imagined, holding the audience rapt” (The Financial Times) will receive its New York premiere with Haydn’s String Quartet in G minor, Op. 74, No. 3, and Schubert’s String Quintet in C major, D. 965 (Jay Campbell, guest cellist)
