Investment and Legal Strategies for Advanced Energy Performance in Real Estate

A conference presented by:

The Steven L. Newman Real Estate Institute
The Zicklin School of Business
Baruch College, CUNY
in association with
Associated Renewable
at
Hodgson Russ LLP
1540 Broadway, Floor 24
New York, NY 10036
(Enter at 45th Street)

Evidence of a seismic shift in the nation's energy economy continues to mount. This month, Barclays downgraded its corporate bond outlook for the entire US electric-utility sector because of analyst concerns about the industry's internal resistance to change, and the growing competition that it faces from the increasingly viable alternative of solar + storage. As a marketing sponsor of New York Energy Week, our conference will provide perspectives on innovative financing and legal strategies that will allow organizations to take the lead in ensuring advanced energy performance in the real estate sector.

Cost is at the core of every decision to invest in energy efficiency. Innovative financing approaches are critical in closing the gap between public policy and private interest by stimulating a market for energy investments. The opportunity for earning attractive returns by investing in energy efficiency makes a strong business case for enhancing value in real estate portfolios.

The regulatory climate for real estate investment has increased investor opportunities related to energy efficiency. Understanding legal issues around innovative energy financing is also crucial to incorporating energy efficiency in asset management. The development of efficiency standards, building codes and energy disclosure requirements is driving the adoption of city, state and national sustainability agendas-- for example, New York City's PlaNYC initiative and the global non-profit Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).

Attendees will learn how to organize and implement an energy-efficient framework for buildings or for a portfolio of properties from experts in energy, finance, law and compliance, who will cover topics such as:
++ Energy audits; certification to standards; and energy sources
++ Identifying sources of capital; split incentives and energy-aligned leases; energy services agreements (ESAs); PACE financing; on-bill financing
++ Emerging regulatory frameworks; standards of care in tort law
++ Legal and regulatory compliance

Scott Slidell, CEO of First Sustainable LLC, will deliver the Keynote address. The conference will include speakers, panel discussions, breakout sessions and opportunities for networking. Please note that seating is limited. Free for Baruch Faculty and Students. For further information, including sponsorship opportunities, please contact Sara.hilskataylor@baruch.cuny.edu or call 646-660-6950.

9:00 AM 3rd Annual CUNY IVE Faculty Development Seminar (Multi-Day Event)
From Entrepreneurship Students to Student Entrepreneurs -- The 3rd Annual Faculty Development Workshop -- Virtual Enterprise & The Entrepreneurship Spectrum.

This CUNY IVE seminar will equip you with tools to teach your students the soft -- and hard -- skills needed to launch an idea and to build an effective start-up.

Virtual Enterprise (VE) is a series of modular activities and events through which students in classrooms of any discipline develop realistic, commercially viable projects. It is an active-learning pedagogical framework that blurs the lines between business and the underlying discipline as students take a holistic view of their firm and learn essential organizational and soft skills. Since the exercises are student-led, and products/services are student-conceptualized and dynamic, learners are continually engaged in problem identification and problem solving.

This seminar will present the Virtual Enterprise pedagogy and demonstrate how it can be integrated into classrooms of any discipline. The ideal participants are college faculty members and workforce grant writers who are seeking a method of infusing business-readiness and entrepreneurship skills into courses or program proposals. Seasoned implementers of Virtual Enterprise are invited to give short talks.
