Description:
The William Alanson White Psychoanalytic Society is the society of graduates of the Division I (psychoanalytic) training program. Each year the Society organizes the Scientific Colloquium Series consisting of invited speakers of international repute to speak on topics related to a general theme selected by the president of the Society. The Society also co-ordinates, sponsors or supports other educational activities in local, national, as well as international forums. Additionally, the Society serves as the conduit for communicating and advocating the interests, concerns, and opinions of its membership to the various administrative bodies of the White Institute. Participation in the activities of the Society provides an opportunity to interested graduates to get involved with the administrative and academic life of the Institute. The Society performs its functions via a Board of five voting Officers elected by the general membership, one non-voting Officer, three Liaison Officers, and various permanent as well as ad hoc committees.
The White Society had its origins in 1950 as the William Alanson White Association which was composed of psychoanalytic graduates and current candidates of the White Institute. The William Alanson White Psychoanalytic Society was formed in late 1951 as a Society of Institute Graduates only, with Clara Thompson, M.D., as its first president in 1952.
