Description:
Kaki King

Experimental/Indie vocalist and guitarist Kaki King got her start to her amazing career by busking in the NYC subways where her dexterous playing style attracted the attention of Velour Music Group, who immediately signed her up. They released her debut album Everybody Loves You in 2003; and her second album the following year, Legs to Make Us Longer on Epic Records. Incessant touring with headline performances followed throughout the US, Canada, Europe, Japan and Australia. She’s also performed on late night talk shows, including “…Letterman”, “…Conan O’Brien”, and most recently, Later with Jools Holland (UK). Her inventive hit song Playing With Pink Noise is a favorite on youtube.com, in which her guitar also creatively serves as a percussive instrument. Gay.com calls her style “jaw-dropping”, and her harmonic overtones “hover in the air like giddy angels.”

King sings in a charming little-girl voice, the polar opposite of her strong and potent guitar playing. Her repertoire includes "Jessica", an acoustic rock ballad dedicated to her first girlfriend. "Until We Felt Red" has been called “an improvised conversation between guitar and drums”; and “Gay Sons of Lesbian Mothers,” a delicate rhythmic song which switches between acoustic, electric, and steel (slide) guitar.

King has recently branched out into film work, receiving a 2007 Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Score for her co-composition in the Sean Penn-directed film Into the Wild. In addition, she recorded two tracks for the film August Rush, in which she appears as a guitar-playing hand double.

Aside from Penn, King also has a fan in Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, who asked her to duet with him on Ballad of The Beaconsfield Miners from the Foos’ current album Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace. Grohl is quoted as saying: “There are some guitar players that are good and there are some guitar players that are really f**king good. And then there’s Kaki King.”

Catch Kaki King intimate, up close, and personal as she closes the 55 Underground Concert Series at Baruch Performing Arts Center on May 29.
