Description:
Program: Lou Harrison (String Quartet); Maurice Ravel (String Quartet in F)

As Baruch Performing Arts Center’s resident chamber music group and perennial favorite, the Alexander String Quartet returns to BPAC in celebration of its 26th year. The Alexander String Quartet has secured its standing among the world’s premier ensembles by being widely admired for its interpretations of Beethoven, Mozart, and Shostakovich; as well as ad¬vocating new music through commissions and premieres. They have released several CDs to tremendous critical acclaim, including BMG Classics’ nine-CD set of the Beethoven cycle. Their extensive concert calendar has taken them to destinations throughout Europe, North America and parts of Asia. They have collaborated with distin¬guished artists such as pianist Menahem Pressler, soprano Elly Ameling and saxophonist Branford Marsalis. In the year after forming in NYC in 1981, they became the first string quartet to win the Concert Artists Guild Competition. In 1985, they captured international attention by becoming the only American Quartet to win the London International String Quartet Competition. In celebration of their two decades of service to Baruch College as the center’s resident chamber music ensemble, they were awarded the College’s Presidential Medals. In addition to performances, the quartet leads an extensive arts education program for the students of Baruch College.
