“Do Not Call” List for Cell Phone Users
You may have heard that a directory of cell phone numbers will soon be published and urges users to enter their cell phone numbers on a federal “do not call” list to prevent unsolicited calls from telemarketers. To register your phone, you must call 1-888-382-1222 from your cell phone. You may also go to http://www.donotcall.gov to sign up.
There is discussion among the major wireless phone providers, except Verizon (see http://news.vzw.com/news/2004/06/pr2004-06-21.html), of their intention to compile a directory of customers cell phone numbers. The proposed directory would not be a published directory, but only be available through directory assistance for a fee.
In September 2004, the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee voted 12-10 to pass the Wireless 411 Privacy Act, sponsored by Sens. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) and Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.). This bill would prohibit wireless carriers from including subscribers’ phone numbers in published directories without their consent.
