Baruch Computing and Technology Center (BCTC)
Green IT Initiatives
Printing - The BCTC is exploring ways to reduce the amount of printing that is done in the computer labs. The goal for the 2010-2011 academic year is to save 100 trees through measures such as default double-sided printing, default draft mode printing, and user education.
Server Virtualization - By using virtualization technology the BCTC eliminated the need to purchase 120 servers, thus reducing energy consumption and air conditioning requirements that these units would have used.
Power Savings - All College-owned desktop computers are set to go into "sleep mode" after 30 minutes of inactivity.
Data Center - The BCTC has engaged a consultant to analyze how the College's data centers may be operated with greater energy efficiency.
E-Books - The BCTC encourages faculty to use digital materials such as e-books for their courses and provides support, including small grants, to support initiatives that reduce the need for students to print.
