Customize Your Navigation

Blackboard Version 6 introduced control over the appearance of Blackboard course navigation buttons. You can choose the names of the buttons, use text-based navigation instead of buttons, and link directly from the course menu to any course content or tools. You can also create a menu item that links directly to an external website.   In Version 6.3, you can also view your Course Menu in Quick View or Display View.

To Customize the Text on youur Course Menu Buttons:

  • In the Control Panel, locate the Course Options section. Click on Manage Course Menu (the first option).
  • Locate a menu item that you want to rename, and click the Modify button to the right of the menu item name.
  • You can also Add a new content area, Tool Area, Course Link or External Link to your Course Menu.

Add a new section to the course menu.

  • You can rename any content area.  The character limit is 17 characters (better to keep it to 15 characters).
  • Click Submit to save the change.
  • If you go back to the entry page of your course, you will see that the menu has been altered to reflect your changes.

To Create a Menu Link to an External Website:

  • Access the Manage Course Menu area through the Control Panel (as described above).
  • In the Manage Course Menu screen, click on the External Link option (listed in the Add menu at the top pf the page).
  • Name your menu item, and enter the web address of the link that you want to direct your students to. Remember to include all of the proper syntax for the link (for example, the New York Times website would be: http://www.nytimes.com).

  • Make sure the last box, labeled “Make available for students” is checked.
  • Click Submit to save the changes to your menu.

To change the look and feel of your Course Menu:

  • Click on Course Options > Course Design
  • Click on Course Menu Design

  • In this area, you can change between buttons and text for your Course Menu Display View.  If you select text as your Course Menu navigation, you can change the color of the background area and the text itself.

  • Exit the Control Panel and see how these changes altered your Course Menu.  If you are seeing the Quick View, click on Display View in the Tools boxes in the Course Menu area.
