Dr. Robbin Chapman is the Associate Provost and Academic Director of Diversity and Inclusion, and Lecturer in the Education Department at Wellesley College. She previously served as Manager of Diversity Recruitment and Assistant Associate Provost for Faculty Equity at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Robbin Chapman provides strategic leadership and vision for the College’s diversity and inclusion efforts, and academic and faculty excellence initiatives. Dr. Chapman’s design-focused course entitled, EDUC322: Digital Technologies and Learning Communities, merges Education and Computer Science theory and praxis to create a space where students may reimagine how learning happens in partnership with computational technologies. Her teaching has been recognized by the College’s student-nominated “Spotlight on Teaching.” Her students presented class projects at various conferences, including the College’s Digital Scholarship Day.
Dr. Chapman earned her S.M. degree at MIT’s Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her research and teaching interests include design and use of computational tools for learning in public spaces, and examining equity issues as they relate to learning technologies and culturally- responsive pedagogy. Her publications include the book, The Computer Clubhouse: Constructionism and Creativity in Youth Communities and chapters in Social Capital and Information Technology, Falling for Science: Objects in Mind, Communities of Practice: Creating Learning Environments for Educators, and The Wiley Handbook of Learning Technology.
Dr. Chapman currently serves on a number of boards and serves as regional liaison for the Ford Foundation Fellowship Program, administered through the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.
Dr. Chapman explores creative ways of leveraging technology for learning, and provides strategic leadership for equity and diversity efforts. She has consulted with many organizations, including: Boston University, Harvard University, HERC, MIT, National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, National Alliance for Partnerships in Equity, Northeast Regional Computing Program, Massachusetts STEM Summit, University of North Carolina, USDA, and Vanderbilt University.
