Baruch College Students Win 1st Place in IAQF Academic Case Competition
Second Consecutive Year Students in the Master’s in Financial Engineering Program Capture Top Spot
NEW YORK, NY- June 28, 2016–Baruch College students from the Master’s in Financial Engineering Program (MFE) won first place in the Fifth Annual International Association for Quantitative Finance (IAQF) Academic Affiliate Membership Student Competition. The Baruch team tied the top spot with teams from the University of Chicago and the University of California, Berkeley. This marks the second consecutive year that Baruch MFE students have captured first place in the competition.
Competing against 25 teams from 17 programs, Baruch students researched and wrote a paper on estimating industry sensitivities to oil prices and the effectiveness of hedges of oil price risks. The competition submissions went through a blind, multi-level selection process and were reviewed by a judging panel comprised of IAQF Board and Advisory Board Members. The winning teams will be awarded a share of the $2,000 prize and will be invited to present their solutions at an IAQF-sponsored event in New York.
“The IAQF competition requires a different set of skills than trading competitions, but an equally valuable one for the future careers of our students,” says Dan Stefanica, MFE Program Co-Director. “The experience of working as a team on researching the different angles to approach the problem and assembling the pieces into a coherent viewpoint and paper enhanced the skills of our students. And the experience of winning the competition will stay with the students forever.”
The team worked under the direction of Mathematics Professor Andrew Lesniewski and MFE alumnus Scott Hounsell '15 and was led by Team Captains Biya Wu ‘16 and ShengQuan Zhou ‘17. Team members included Danielle Chen ‘16, Qing (Charles) Huang ‘16, Meng Wang ‘16 and David Zhang ‘16.
The IAQF competition marked the end of a remarkably successful year for Baruch’s MFE students who also won the prestigious Rotman International Trading Competition and placed second in the UChicago Midwest Trading Competition.
