NEW YORK, NY - March 21, 2016 -Dollars & Sense, Baruch College’s award-winning magazine published by the Weissman School of Arts & Sciences journalism department and its students, nabbed two top journalism prizes, one for its groundbreaking reporting from Cuba and the other for overall excellence. The student-run publication’s “Cuba in 2015: Entrepreneurism on the Rise” was named Best Student Business Journalism of 2015 by the Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW). This marks Dollars & Sense’s first Best in Business prize from SABEW. It will be presented at the organization’s annual conference in Washington, D.C. in May.
Dollars & Sense also received the Silver Crown from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, recognizing it as one of the top three online student publications for 2015.
Founded in 1979 by Professor Roslyn Bernstein, Dollars & Sense was printed each spring and distributed to students, faculty, corporate leaders and media professionals in the New York region. In 2009, Dollars & Sense moved to an online format to capitalize on multimedia technology and publish students’ work, including video and podcasts, more frequently.
The Cuba program for journalism students was conceived and led by Professor Andrea Gabor in 2015. A second team visited Cuba in January 2016 and produced “Cuba 2016: Change, Promise, Hurdles on a trip led by Professor Vera Haller.
